Hunter's Feedback
I had the pleasure of spending several days at Shabalala in July. From the abundant game and awe-inspiring sunsets to the fellowship around the evening campfire, every moment of my time at Shabalala was special. I was impressed with not only the professionalism, but the warmth and hospitality shown me. I had heard great things about the South African people, but the Keenys exceeded even my high expectations. I truly felt like a guest in their home and look forward to my next visit.

I was so fortunate to share my first South African hunting experience with Shabalala Safaris. Along with being one of the finest and most challenging hunting experiences of my life, it was only made better by the wonderful hospitality of the Keeny Family. Mike and Nerina made sure that the hunting, accommodations, food, and most of all, the friendships, were second to none. Along with the 7 trophies that I harvested, I brought back some unbelievable memories and plan to hunt again with Shabalala Safaris!

I first met Mike and Nerina while hunting with another PH in the area. Each time we visited them there always seemed to be plenty of game, and a good variety of species. I remember one afternoon in particular. We were enjoying a sundowner watching a waterhole when a magnificent Kudu with horns that went over 60” came in to drink. It was common place to see Nyala bulls displaying at the right time of year. Then in 2009 Mike offered me a chance at a Leopard. That turned out to be one of the best hunts I have had. We had as many as 4 Leopards feeding on different baits at different times. If it had not been for Mike’s persistence, and refusal to quit, I would not have shot my leopard. Their hospitality, service, and in particular the food was always first class. I hope to be able to hunt with them again soon.

My experience hunting with shabalala safaris was more than I expected. Mike and his PH’s did all they could and more to put me in position with bow and rifle to get the game i wanted to hunt. The food was awesome, PH’s were fun and very competent, campfire stories were a great way to end the day. I have no idea how Mike spotted that Kudu I harvested at 800 yards up a mountain and behind a tee with the naked eye but he did. When I return to Africa to hunt, and I will, I will return to shabalala.

Words cannot express the experience that Shabalala provides. From the diversity of game to the education about culture and conservation, Shabalala wasn’t just about the hunt. Shabalala provided memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

My first experience with Mike was his expert insight and guidance to finding a very nice wildebeest. We got within 200 yards and in a matter of minutes the animal was added to our trophy list. As a host, the entire Keeny family is a joy to be around. The accommodations are comfortable and their hospitality is second to none. The evenings around the camp fire are most enjoyable and create memories that will last a life time. I look forward to sharing more experiences with Mike and his family this coming July, when I will return to their beautiful country for another hunting adventure.

I can not wait till the next time I am at Shabalala sitting around the fire with great people and an Amstel or brandy and coke in my hand, pondering about what animals I will cross paths with tomorrow!

I have hunted Shabalala annually for many years and hope to continue to do so. It is a fixture in my year that I always look forward to. I continue to return for a number of reasons, including friendly, helpful hosts and staff, an abundance of game and varied terrain. Hunts are typically challenging but it is rare for hunters to return home empty handed. I cannot recommend Shabalala highly enough.

Honestly, Shabalala is my most favorite place to be. From all the amazing hunts to the game drives to the chats around the fire, it is a special place indeed. I have experienced Shabalala and the Keeny’s for many, many years. Whether with my family, or many of my friends, we have experienced some of our greatest outdoor moments there. The hunting is great, the atmosphere is therapeutic and the company is delightful. I can’t wait to go again!
